]]>Whilst in other industries women in senior positions are few and far between, what the evidence collated by The Drum highlights, thankfully, is that in our industry at least we’re doing a great job of bucking the trend.
According to research by the head of the Professional Boards Forum, Jane Scott, just 4 out of 87 executive directors of FTSE 100 organisations are female!
Here at LHM we’d like to congratulate Emma not only on making this list but also on passing her Google AdWords exam this week, adding yet deeper breadth of knowledge and experience that we can bring to clients’ online projects.
Take a peek at who we are and what we do here on Fleet Street, then get in touch – we’d love to bring out the digital in you!

]]>I entered the B-Hive competition in March 2012. I’d never heard of it before and hate to think that I nearly missed out. The competition was to answer a creative brief for Visit Birmingham. My campaign began as above the line but I soon realised it had transformed to be very digitally driven. The people at B-Hive saw this and entered me into the digital category and I’m so glad they did. From this point B-Hive has provided me with some invaluable experiences, the most valuable being work placements including two weeks here with LHM media.
The realisation of Digital advertising being a direction I might take, has been a journey from fine art to graphic design, specialising in advertising and now focusing even more on digital and looking into the future. Through this journey the most valuable thing I have learnt is the importance of a good idea. Never put style over substance. This knowledge crosses all areas of design, especially within digital. Whatever you create has to be worthwhile and provide something more than just looking pretty.
I am currently nearing the end of my placement at LHM and it’s become so much clearer to me what life in an agency could be like (all good from LHM). I’ve loved my time here, LHM is a rare and wonderful place to work, with lovely people and more importantly the baking of LHMmmm on a Friday, which I entered cautiously, competing against Steve’s Victoria Sponge.
In such a short space of time I’ve gained so much from LHM, learning the creative side aswell as the account handling and social media, it’s been a wonderful two weeks. I encourage all creatives to enter B-Hive, support Birmingham’s creative industry and especially look out for LHM Media.

]]>Entrants of this year’s B-Hive competition will be placed at relevant agencies specialising in PR, Digital, Advertising and Graphic Design.
The Midlands competition was launched by Pitch Consultants who said: “Rob Markwell, director of Pitch Consultants, said: “It is incredibly difficult for students to get their first break in the creative industries, regardless of the economic climate, however, it has become more evident that those wishing to pursue a career in marketing, design or PR need to realise that their academic achievements will not be enough to secure a job straight after university.
B-Hive provides bright and determined students with the opportunity to prove themselves to panel of leading employers and thus fast track their way into the industry. At Pitch we are committed to working with the universities to reinforce this message and encourage more students to take part in schemes such as B-Hive.”
Steven Lawrence, Creative Director at LHM said “Providing young people with opportunities like this is so important for the future of the industry, and exactly why I co-founded the Social Media Partnership in 2009. Giving young people of all backgrounds access to real work opportunities in the current climate is vital. Fortunately, the digital industry is growing year on year and a solid career path for those that choose it.
Initiatives like B-Hive 2012 give talented students and employers the opportunity to get to know each other. It’s been great to see the ability that’s out there. The winners will pick up a lot learning agency processes and most importantly working with creative talent from multiple agencies.”
The overall winner of the web design category was Daniel Cooper who will spend two weeks at Cogent, LHM Media, and Freestyle amongst others.
The overall winner of the marketing category was Deva Shinh, who has won four week placements at National Express and Marketing Birmingham.
Amelia Walker won in the PR category and will go on to complete work experience at Leader, McCann, Seal, Willoughby, Rewired & Grayling.
Joseph Heeley was the winner of the graphic design category winning placements at Holman Group, Cognition, Orb & Vital.
Ross Stinton and creative team Chris Meaton & Guillaume Cocken were joint overall winners in the advertising category.

]]>The agency, launched six years ago, has maintained its steady growth plan, and has just welcomed two new recruits; Rob Green and Dan Marsh.
Creative Director Steven Lawrence said: “We have steadily enhanced the agency over the past year, expanding both the creative and account handling teams, and further to a number of new contracts being awarded to us – most recently the Card Town project from CEWE Color – we’ve needed to develop the agency further.
“Rob joins us as an art director, having built up a great reputation working with creative agencies across the Midlands, while Dan has been welcomed on board as a senior account manager, bringing six years’ industry experience to the role after working with agencies including McCann Erickson and Cogent Elliot.
“Both Rob and Dan are dynamic, enthusiastic and highly-motivated, and will be great additions to the existing LHM team. We’re looking forward to introducing them to our clients and bringing their expertise into the mix,” he said.
LHM has an excellent reputation within the region, working with clients including The Carphone Warehouse, CEWE Color, The Chartered Institute of Marketing and Thomson Reuters, as well as operating its social enterprise business; the Social Media Partnership, which ring-fences fees from community-focused projects to plough back into the area.
Rob Green said: “I was attracted to the LHM role because of the business’s excellent reputation within the Midlands, its diverse client portfolio and its sense of social responsibility. I was impressed with the camaraderie that the team enjoys and the support network in place. It’s a fantastic place to work and I’m really looking forward to being a part of the company’s future.”
Dan said: “I really liked the idea of working at a fast-growing and emerging agency that was very different from the agencies I’ve previously worked with. Expanding my digital experience was a huge appeal, but also working with a much broader range of clients that I could have much more strategic involvement in. It’s exciting being somewhere where you feel you can really help to build something, both with client’s brands and the agency itself.”
Both Rob and Dan are huge Birmingham City FC fans, ensuring office harmony.

]]>B-Hive is open to all students who are currently in their 2nd, 3rd and final year of study at participating universities and colleges and offers the opportunity to win one of 30 paid placements within a marketing agency. The scheme is also open to 2011 graduates from these same institutions.
Students are provided with a marketing brief, pick a category that’s most appropriate to them and pitch. The best entrants in each discipline are invited to present to the panel of industry experts including LHM, Cogent Elliot and McCann Erickson during a three day event in March 2012.
The chosen students will gain an insight and some key work experience they will need to progress their careers in a design agency.
